Chibi Astroboy by capsicum Chibi Astroboy by capsicum
I absolutely LOVED Astroboy when I was younger. I think I was around 7 or 8 when it ws on TV. He was such an adorable, cool little robot. Everything about that show was just damn awesome. When I was 17, I saw it again for the first time since I was little and I nearly cried when the theme song and opening sequence started. XD; I like still enjoy Astroboy now even though the animation's not the best and the acting is really bad sometimes. I think I'll always have a soft spot for it. This is the proper Astroboy I'm talking about - not the new one which I saw five minutes of for the first time the other day. (I didn't like it.)

My brief thoughts of the new one:

I don't understand why they *completly* changed Atlas. Atlas was so cool in the original series and now from the looks of it, he's just some other kid/teen robot. He was/is supposed to be a menacing threat and constant worry but the new Atlas doesn't seem very threatening. I also absolutely DETEST the catchphrase "Let's rocket!" v_v;; Astroboy was NOT about lame catchphrases. There was nothing about that show that was lame. >:F I did have another thing to say about it but I don't remember now what it was.

I chose to draw him in this pose because it seems that the most remembered thing about Astro was that he had a laser come out of his butt. The background is supposed to be some techy, sciency place. :o

One other thing, Astroboy's sister is NOT called "AstroGIRL". >_< Her name is "Uran". Sorry, but that's a common mistake that really annoys me.

My advice, don't watch the dub of the 2003 series. Recommend watching original Japanese version of 2003 series if available. Much better. No shitty catchphrases. Worth a watch.

I think I was 3 or 4 when I watched it, I used to come running into the living room with my red rubber boots and my black underwear on jumping around and fighting imaginary baddies, I LOVVEEDD that show, its was my reason for being a kid. I too only watched about 5 mins of the new one, its unbelievable what they do to our cartoons and shows nowadays, I think they should be burned at the stake...but sadly todays young has no IDEA what their missing.... some days when I was in a bad mood I'd pretend to be Atlas(the real one) too, but not very often.

This is an awesome image, well done, and brings back some really old memories, definitely worth the fav!

in the 1950/60's version, she was called Astrogirl in the american dub. But i know her real name from the Omega Factor GBA game, which is really, really good. Anyway, i love this little guy.

This is adorable.

But I must point out... the 2003 depiction of Atlas is actually more accurate to Tezuka's original manga and the 60's series(which I don't really like much, at least the english version, but meh). In the 80's series, they merged Atlas's character with another character called the Blue Knight, resulting in the major character he became. That being said, I do actually like the 80's depiction of Atlas more than the original. It's got more depth. I was surprised when I found out he was a relatively minor character originally. xP

The 2003 series is one of my favorites, but I also detest the "Let's rocket!" catchprase. It's so... stupid. I feel like rolling my eyes and laughing every time I hear it. And I don't like that they completely screwed up the episode order on the English-version DVDs. But if you can get past the stupid catchprases and stuff, it's actually not a half-bad show. I love how Tenma has a bigger role in it, for example. :D

But meh... that's my opinion. Sorry for rambling at you, I saw your artist's description and just couldn't help myself. This really is an adorable picture. x3

I see, I see. Well, I stand somewhat corrected! :)But, regardless, I still <3 80's Atlas.

Maybe I should give the 03 series a shot. The original version perhaps... Hmmm...

Don't be sorry for rambling! I always enjoy reading a good ramble.
Ephriokko Featured By Owner Jun 9, 2011  Student
Yeah, 80's Atlas is awesome. <3 He makes a return in the newer iPhone/iPod Astro Boy application that came out this year(Astro Boy Tap Tap Rush). The translations are atrocious, but the game itself isn't half bad. =3

Personally, I wouldn't go for the 60's version unless you could find the Japanese version somewhere. Some of the name changes in the dubbing are downright facepalm-worthy. I stopped watching after a few episodes; I couldn't take it anymore by the time I found out that "Robot Land" got turned into "Hullaballoo Land" and "Princess Odette" got changed into "Princess Lollipop". The 60's series DOES have its fans; I'm just not one of 'em, lol.

Indeed, rambles are very entertaining. :la:

Hey, where can I find the older one to watch? I suddenly got into Astroboy and now I'm absolutely fanatic about it, but I'm not sure if the one I'm watching is the newer one or what.
I think it must be the newer one, though, because he DOES say "Let's rocket!" pretty often.

Cool. Astroboy rocks!

As for the new Atlas, the one in the 2003 anime is actually closer to the one who debuted in the original manga in the 1950s in both looks & personality. The 80s Atlas is actually a cross between the original Atlas, Blue Knight & Astro's brother Cobalt. Since Blue Knight appears in the new show, the new Atlas doesn't need to be a revolutionary like he was in the 80s. His struggle with Astroboy is more of a personal one like in the old days than a political one like in the 80s. Robot Daichi's biker outfit is loosely based on the manga version of 80s Atlas, though, with the markings under his eyes & the round thing on his chest.
