We were traveling from one city to another and supposed to be catching a night ferry. When we got to the port, though, the ferry was full so alternative travel arragements were made then and there...
1. Cram into a packed jeepney and drive for maybe 45 mins through CRAZY rain and thunderstorm. 2. Board smaller cargo style ferry. Ride for 3ish hours. 3. Take tricycle to bus station. Arrive maybe 10:30ish. 4. Discover the next bus doesn't leave until 1am. 5. Hang around bus station drinking red wine. 6. Get on crowded air-conditionless bus. Notice numerous boxes filling up the back seats. Realise chickens/roosters are inside the boxes. 7. Try to relax/sleep/enjoy journey.
None of that is really too bad. It obviously wasn't what we expected but we were all making the best of it. But at maybe 3am, the bus stopped at an intersection and outside somewhere a lone rooster crowed. Instantly, ALL the chickens/roosters in the bus also started crowing. This was hilarious until we realised they weren't going to stop. And they didn't! They cock-a-doodle-dooed for HOURS. Needless to say, we were all tired, frustrated and not in the most cheery mood when we FINALLY reached our destination. It was the worst bus ride I'd ever had. But as bad as it was at the time, it's probably one of my favourite memories, too.
Ugh I know just how it feels riding in crappy transportation. I lived in Colombia South America for about a year with my husband and when we would have to take the bus it was awful. They cram them so full of people that some have to stand the entire seven hour trip. There's kids throwing up everywhere because the bus driver drives like a maniac.
So many people get killed in those buses and I rode one of them for seven hours to and from my destination. Oh and we got stopped by the army and were held at gunpoint while they looked at all our baggage.
Wow. That sounds very similar and very intense. Especially the part about the army and being held at gunpoint!
While most of the bus rides I rode on, the bus driver seemed to be driving fairly normally, but I can imagine that some would be driving like maniacs. One day, we drove past a bus that had just gone off the road down into a ditch. People were crowding around and crying and it was pretty sad to see. As we were in the middle of nowhere I wondered how they were going to get home. I wonder how often stuff like that happens?
this is interesting! when i first saw the image, i remembered this local comic about chickens suddenly becoming intelligent etc... it was called "Elmer" and i thought your art was related to it, since you've been to the PH and all
here's some info abt the comic if you're interested [link]

I know I'll never forget that experience.
